QM2 Cruise Review
Eastbound
Transatlantic Crossing onboard
Queen Mary 2
New
York to Southampton
April
29th - May 5th 2006
My
husband, 15 month toddler and
I enjoyed the perfect voyage across
the
Atlantic
Ocean from New York to Southampton.
Before boarding we spent time
with
family at the lakes in Michigan,
Niagara and then three night at
Time
Square
New York.
Sailing
past the statue of liberty, champagne
glass in hand, I felt as if I
was
following in the footsteps of
the rich and famous of a bygone
era. The
tradition
of Queen Mary 2 represents a unique
cruising experience. One
of
the
most treasured moments of my cruise
holiday was arriving at the port
and
catching
my first glimpse of this amazing
ship - at 151,400 gross tonnes
and
able
to hold 2620 passengers - she
is the biggest ocean liner in
the world!
We
had a balcony stateroom with plenty
of room to sit out and enjoy a
pre
dinner
aperitif. The stateroom was spacious
with sitting area and plenty of
storage
space in the wardrobe - very important
when you have long evening
dresses
to keep wrinkle free. You can
even receive and send e-mails
from
your
stateroom for a nominal fee a
great way to make your friends
jealous as
you
order another cocktail of the
day. If you are feeling peckish
you can
order
room service through the computer
in your stateroom! Hey presto
a club
sandwich
arrives 10 minutes later at no
additional charge.
Queen
Mary 2’s
public rooms are beautifully decorated,
well maintained, and
almost
never congested. Everything is
kept spotlessly clean and there
is a
bar
to suit every taste from the Verve
Clique Champagne bar to the Golden
Lion
Pub. We dined in the Britannia
Restaurant which covers the length
of
the
ship and over three decks. Our
waiters Phindy and Nicolas could
not do
enough
to keep us happy preparing small
portions and special desserts
for my
son
Oliver each night and entertaining
him while we enjoyed our meal.
For a
more
informal dining experience we
had breakfast and lunch in the
King's
Court
area where you can enjoy a wonderful
buffet selection. Don't miss
afternoon
tea in the Queen's Room - clotted
cream, lashings of jam and
served
by white glove waiters.
Entertainment
was very diverse - Theatre shows,
Jazz bands, films, quizzes
and
the Ascot Ball which takes a black
and white theme and is a very
sophisticated
evening. For families I cannot
rave enough about the Queen
Mary
2’s "The
Zone",
its the children's area and my
15 month old son was
treated
like a prince. He was cared for
by British trained Nannies and
kept
busy
with activities and even a soft
play area. I felt that he was
safe and
we
were given a pager so that we
could be called if he was upset.
Meaning
that
my husband and I could enjoy the
evening entertainment safe in
the
knowledge
that our son was happy in the
night nursery ready to pick him
up
on
the stoke of midnight. For older
children tea is served from 5-6pm
each
day
at the Chef galley.
In
conclusion the Queen Mary 2 is
a floating 5 star resort. The
journey is
the
holiday and I did not find the
ship pretentious in the least.
