Athens has quite a reputation to live up to. Named for Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, the city is credited with being the cradle of European civilization and birthplace of democracy. Ruins and relics of its glory days are scattered throughout the modern city, popping up where you least expect them. Its crowning glory is the Acropolis, perched atop a hillside, and covered in carved and columned temples of varying degrees of antiquity. Not quite so old is the Plaka, an appealing neighborhood for a stroll down cobblestone streets, past old mansions and a plethora of outdoor tavernas ideal for watching the world go by, while munching tasty Greek snacks.

Kusadasi is your port of access to an age-old civilization. Ephesus was once the second largest metropolitan area in the Roman Empire, eclipsed only by Rome herself. Explore this city of construction both monumental and mundane. It was famed for the Temple of Artemis, one of the wonders of the ancient world; the Library of Celsus, with its thousands of scrolls; and its amphitheater, with a capacity of 24,000 spectators. But you can also imagine yourself in the sandals of a resident as you stroll the streets, past marketplaces, and into bath complexes that offered piped-in hot water, massage, and sauna.

Constanta was an ancient metropolis and seaport, founded by the Greeks in 600 BC. It has a place in legend too, as Jason is said to have landed here with the Argonauts after finding the Golden Fleece. It is a repository of archaeological treasures, most importantly a vast complex on three levels that once linked the upper town to the harbor. Two-thirds of it remains, including a large display of multicolored mosaics. The old town is full of atmosphere and worth a wander. Fine mansions and hotels were built in the 19th century, when the king decided to revive Constanta as a port and seaside resort, and a casino is a more recent addition.

Relatively new as European cities go, Odessa was founded in 1794 by Catherine the Great, and became an important commercial and cultural center, and the Black Sea's greatest seaport. Two famous sites claim the interests of most visitors: The neo-baroque Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater is considered one of the world's finest opera houses, with unique acoustics in its luxurious rococo hall, that allow even a whisper from the stage to be heard in every corner. The Odessa Steps were the set for an iconic scene in motion picture history, in a scene from the Battleship Potemkin, where hundreds of citizens were killed on the great stone steps.

Sochi resides in that tiny portion of Russia that can boast a subtropical climate, making it a long time holiday heaven for domestic tourists – celebrities and the political elite included. During Soviet days, even Comrade Stalin had a dacha here, now open to visitors. Much has changed since then, but the fresh air, majestic mountain scenery, mineral springs, long beaches, warm sunny days, and bustling nightlife, are still a big draw. Ironically this city known for swaying palms and balmy breezes will host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Istanbul is supremely exotic, warmly welcoming, and quite unique – after all, where else can you tour Europe and Asia on the very same afternoon? Must sees include Haghia Sophia, decorated in 30 million tiny mosaic tiles, the greatest church in Christendom for 1000 years, then a mosque and now a museum; and Topkapi, palace of sultans, complete with harem quarters. And of course shopping in the Grand Bazaar, a medieval version of a mall, for unusual gifts to take home, stopping along the way in a café for a cup of Turkish coffee or mint tea.

Canakkale was long a crucial point in the defense of the Dardanelles. Today the port hosts stylish yachts stopping over during pleasure cruises through the straits. But the big stories are still of two wars: the battle of Gallipoli during WWI, and the Trojan War, perhaps three millennia earlier. Once the stuff of mythology, archaeological excavations at Troy have brought life to Homer’s Iliad, and the tale of the beautiful Helen, fought over by outsized warriors like Hercules, and won of course by means of the Trojan horse, a phrase now so common in our language that it has made its way into techno speak.
