Rio de Janeiro is a huge seaside city in Brazil, famed for its Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, 38m Christ the Redeemer statue atop Mount Corcovado and for Sugarloaf Mountain, a granite peak with cable cars to its summit. The city is also known for its sprawling favelas (shanty towns). Its raucous Carnaval festival, featuring parade floats, flamboyant costumes and samba dancers, is considered the world’s largest.

Day 2 - Ilhabela

Ilhabela is an archipelago off the southeast coast of Brazil. The main island, Ilha de São Sebastião, is known for beaches like Castelhanos, Curral and Jabaquara. On the island's west coast, Ilhabela city is home to the white-and-blue Nossa Senhora d’Ajuda church. In vast, forested Ilhabela State Park, trails lead to Gato and Água Branca waterfalls. Offshore dive sites include the Aymoré and Velasquez shipwrecks

Itajaí is a port city in southeast Brazil. It’s known for surf beaches like Praia Brava and Praia do Atalaia. At Geremias Beach, Bico do Papagaio rock resembles a parrot’s head. The 1955 Blessed Sacrament Church was built in neo-Gothic and Romanesque styles. The Ethno-Archaeological Museum shows prehistoric artifacts. Set in art-nouveau Marcos Konder Palace, the Historical Museum houses items tracing the city’s past

Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital, is a major city along Montevideo Bay. It revolves around the Plaza de la Independencia, once home to a Spanish citadel. This plaza leads to Ciudad Vieja (the old town), with art deco buildings, colonial homes and landmarks including the towering Palacio Salvo and neoclassical performance hall Solís Theatre. Mercado del Puerto is an old port market filled with many steakhouses.
