Steeped in maritime history, the natural harbor of this tiny limestone isle was a British Royal Navy hub for more than 500 years. Following breakwater construction in the 19th century it become one of the world’s largest man-made harbors and was later used as an important embarkation port for the D-Day landings. Amidst the quaint villages and rocky, coastal scenery, ancient ruins abound, including the Corfe Castle, built by William the Conqueror and Portland Castle, built by King Henry VIII.
