Best Time For Cherry Blossom Season
As Japan is such a large country, stretching from the islands of the Sea of Okhotsk touching Russia in the far north to the China Sea by Korea to the south, it boasts a rich variety of climates and types of seasonal changes. Although the established window is March to April, this makes the cherry blossom season vary from region to region. On the island of Okinawa, the season can start as early as January while the northern regions can be as late as May. With the peak bloom being around two weeks, a cruise around Japan is an ideal way to maximise your chances of timing it right and getting to see the cherries in bloom in at least one stop off along your voyage.
Best Places in Japan to see the Cherry Blossoms
Mount Yoshino - located at the centre of the southern peninsula of the Kinki region, this natural wonder is accessible from the surrounding ports of Osaka, Shingu and Wakayama.
Hirosaki Castle - situated in the northern Aomori region is a picture postcard image of Japan's famous cherry blossoms in bloom. Around an hour’s drive from the cruise port and with the dominating Mount Iwaki in the background, Hiraki Castle and its scenic parks are a must, whatever the time of year.
Philosopher's Path - this scenic walkway between Kyoto’s most atmospheric temples turns into a riot of colour as petals fall like snow from the trees along the parallel canal.
Meguro River - take a boat trip down Tokyo’s idyllic waterway to float among the falling petals from the majestic trees lining the banks. A night-time session is also possible - illuminated by ambient lighting, this is ideal for a romantic occasion!
